- What motivated you to take on a leadership position?
In all of my working life I have been motivated by the values of Fairness, Social Justice and Rights and Respect. I understand first-hand the impact of the massive divide between rich and poor, of limited opportunities for advancement, and little access to basic education and I am committed to advancing the lives of my community by influencing policy and representing workers in my electorate.
- Were you encouraged or mentored during the process of becoming a leader?
During a brief period of work experience with the Migrant Resource Centre I met a woman who would ultimately change my life. Peggy Errey was at that time an executive member of the Miscellaneous Workers Union [MWU]. Peggy and I had much in common, including that she came originally from Cork, and through her sponsorship I became first a delegate, then official and finally sub-branch secretary of the MWU in Wollongong. I have also been supported and encouraged by many friends colleagues and family throughout my varied roles.
- How did you reach your current position – your career path, studies, opportunities?
A commitment to hard work, my belief in what my political party stands for, the support and loyalty of great friends, colleagues and community.
- How has your leadership role impacted your relationships with family, friends and colleagues?
At times it has created strain when the needs and wants of family and community compete, but overall, I am the beneficiary of enormous support from my family both in a moral and a physical sense with all members of my family who are eligible being members of the same political party.
- What responsibilities do you believe you have to those who “look up to you” as a leader?
To continue to walk my talk, to do what I say I will do to the best of my ability and influence. To listen, to demonstrate genuine concern, and to represent those who trust and rely on me for the betterment of our whole community.
- How do you measure your success as a leader?
Through the success and achievements of all those who have sought my help, assistance and advice over the years, particularly women I have worked with, mentored and supported. Also watching the confidence and self-esteem grow amongst those I have had dealings with.
- What has inspired you to maintain your current position, and do you have aspirations for further leadership roles?
I draw inspiration from all those around me particularly mature aged non English speaking background women who struggle with everyday issues yet maintain a happy and positive disposition. As a mother, grandmother and Member of Parliament I have had many and varied experiences, I believe these have armed me with a broad knowledge and confidence in many different fields.
Where opportunities arise I do as I advise other women to do-put my hand up and go for it!
- What advice would you give other women who are aspiring to be future leaders?
Stand up for what you believe in, imagine what's possible, and go after it with determination, strength, and passion. Don't be afraid to put yourself forward, and you'll be amazed at the support and encouragement that comes from the most unlikely people.
- How do you handle conflict and adversity in your leadership role?
By drawing on the loyalty and strength of those who truly know me, and by remaining clear and focused on the real issue, not the distractions and political games that can be so grossly misunderstood. By holding my head high, and remaining true to my values.
- Who is your leadership role model, and what qualities do they display that you admire?
I have many role models - past and present, and the qualities of hard work, determination, vision, passion and love inspire me. Ordinary Australians, mothers who fight for the rights of their children, people who are courageous in controversy - these people gain my admiration.
- Key advocacies / areas of support
I was a Union Official for 13 years advocating on behalf of workers rights particularly for mature non-English speaking background women and now as a Member for Parliament, I am an advocate on behalf of my constituents on a wide range of issues to the NSW Government.
- Current Board Positions / Directorships
I am a member of numerous Government Committees, Chair of Caucus Committees and Patron of a number of community and sporting organisations.
