- What motivated you to take on a leadership position?
It was always natural for me to lead. I embraced many leadership roles during school and university. My previous profession as a teacher allowed me to practice actions and behaviours that were required to lead large numbers of people. I had a strong passion in the area of health & fitness and with the support of and encouragement of those around me plus the experience I had gained through teaching it motivated me to take the opportunity to lead people in living active, healthy lifestyles. My passion is to lead, motivate and teach people maximise their fitness potential and lead healthier lifestyles.
- Were you encouraged or mentored during the process of becoming a leader?
I was continually encouraged during school by my teachers and peers, and during work by my colleagues and principal to take on leadership roles such as student council roles and coordinator positions. Throughout the process of operating my own business I have sort mentorship from many sources including industry mentors, clients, business advisors, friends & family. Mentoring has had a great impact on my business growth and success. By continually seeking answers, opportunities and learning from others it has enabled my business to keep moving forward, finding the best strategies for a smarter, more savvy approach to operating a business and becoming a successful leader.
- How did you reach your current position – your career path, studies, opportunities?
After finishing my higher school certificate, I was accepted into the bachelor of Education(P.E) at Wollongong University. On completion of my bachelor degree, I worked as a physical education teacher for a period of 6 years but continued to work in the area of fitness before and after school each day. Although I enjoyed school teaching it was my work within the fitness industry that I discovered my true talent and flair for positively impacting the health & wellbeing of my clients. I embraced learning opportunities within the industry and became qualified in many areas of health & fitness which allowed me to be versatile and confident in my many skills. In 2006, I took the leap and established my own business Savvy. Today Savvy is the leading outdoor health & wellbeing enterprise in Wollongong.
- How has your leadership role impacted your relationships with family, friends and colleagues?
My leadership role has positively impacted my relationships with family, friends and colleagues. An important part of my role is to encourage and foster positive relationships among the Savvy community this has also filtered into my closer network. It is a wonderful thing to inspire positive change in those closest to you.
- What responsibilities do you believe you have to those who “look up to you” as a leader?
I believe as a role model and a leader it is so important to practice what you preach. To fulfill the ideals that are attached to your role and to lead by example. If you can do this then you will most certainly inspire and encourage others to take a chance and strive for success for themselves.
- How do you measure your success as a leader?
I believe success can be measured by the impact you have on those that follow.
- What has inspired you to maintain your current position, and do you have aspirations for further leadership roles?
My clients, those who have mentored me through business and those whose passion and commitment have inspired me to believe the sky is the limit. I have learnt so many valuable lessons and still learn from my clients each day. They are a big part of my life and the inspiration behind many of my successes.
I aspire to be a leader within our community. My vision is to engage with the community within which I operate and live and actively contribute to causes and organisations that benefit our community.
- What advice would you give other women who are aspiring to be future leaders?
Follow your passion! When you believe in something and you are passionate about it, you can lead. Believe in yourself, your ability, your product, your service 100%. When you are passionate about what you do, you don’t have to sell it, it sells itself.
Confucius says,
"Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life".
- How do you handle conflict and adversity in your leadership role?
Fortunately the leadership role I have is surrounded with positivity. However, if I was faced with a situation of conflict or adversity I would be proactive in resolving it through positive communication and seek the actions necessary to make change.
- Who is your leadership role model, and what qualities do they display that you admire?
Kerryn McCann, one of Australia’s most successful long distance runners won gold in the marathon at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in a time of 2:30:54, just two seconds ahead of Kenyan Hellen Cherono Koskei. In the final two kilometres of the race, the lead changed six times . McCann managed to get a break in the final two hundred metres around the athletics track inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground and went on to win gold.
Kerryn’s victory made a huge impact on not only our local community but the whole nation. She had an amazing spirit and fight for life that even a stranger could see. From Kerryn I learnt about strength of character and commitment to realise dreams but at the same time achieve balance.
I still watch the finish time and time again and it never ceases to be completely inspirational.
